Joshua Ralph (* 1975), better known as J. Ralph , is a musician whose songs became known mainly through advertisements for various companies such as Porsche, Nike, Volkswagen and Volvo.

Life

Since he never had any musical training, it was difficult for him to write his own songs at first. However, Ralph is known for learning to play a wide variety of instruments in a very short time. These include oboe, saxophone, triangle, harmonica and kazoo. This enables him to write polyphonic instrumental pieces. He has also worked with a 56-piece orchestra, which is particularly noticeable in the song Untitled 17 and consists mainly of members of the New York Philharmonic Symphony. Two of his CDs have been released: The Illusionary Movements of Geraldine and Nazu and Music to Mauzner By , the latter under the pseudonym Spy . In 1999, his song Won't You Come Down was re-released on the soundtrack to the film Mystery Men , which is already featured on the album Spy .

Ralph wrote the theme song Kansas City Shuffle for the Hollywood production Lucky Number Slevin . His studio is in a former silent movie theater in Manhattan. As a composer he was responsible for the music for the film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool (2017).

For the song The Empty Chair , which was used for Brian Oake's documentary Jim: The James Foley Story , he and Sting received an Oscar nomination in 2017 .
