The Hairy slot nose ( Nycteris hispida ), and wire-haired slit nose , is in sub-Saharan Africa occurring bat species of the genus of nycteridae .

description

The hairy slit nose is a small species of bat, the weight of which is about 10 g. The fur color is variable and ranges from dark brown / beige to sepia brown on the back, the belly is lighter in color. The dark wings are slightly hairy. The ears are small compared to other slit noses, the tragus is shaped like a crescent moon. As with other slit noses, the face above the muzzle appears to be divided into two by a longitudinal furrow. The forearm length is about 40.2 mm on average. The hairy slit nose can be distinguished from all other African slit noses by the three-part incisors and the significantly shorter ears (length less than 24 mm).

distribution

The distribution area of the slit noses extends in sub-Saharan Africa from Guinea in the west via Nigeria , the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Central African Republic to South Sudan and Uganda in the east. Tanzania , Mozambique and Zambia are settled in south-eastern Africa .

Way of life

The hairy slit nose occurs in different habitats such as lowland rainforests , forest edges, swamps, marshland and various savannah types such as tree and shrub savannahs . Open grassland areas and arid zones are avoided. During the day, animals of the species can be found hanging freely in dense vegetation, in contrast to mostly dark roosts in trees, houses or caves, which are preferred by most other bats. Hairy slit noses also use these quarters, but to a lesser extent. The animals can be found in the roosts individually, in pairs or in small groups of up to 20 individuals.

Hairy nycteridae have short in relation to body weight and broad wings, a low wing load ( wing loading have) and allow the animal a slow airspeed. Hairy slit noses are so-called gleaner , which means they collect their prey from the surface of the vegetation or the ground instead of catching it in flight. The diet consists of butterflies and beetles , among other things .

Etymology & Research History

The first description of the hairy nose slit was made in 1774 by Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber under the scientific name Vespertilio hispidus in the work the mammals in illustrations after nature with descriptions . The additional species "hispidus" comes from Latin and means "shaggy", which refers to the hairy longitudinal furrow above the snout. The hair on the longitudinal furrow is also present in other slit noses.

Danger

The IUCN has classified the species as not endangered (“least concern”) due to its large distribution area and the presumably large population size.
