At Ling
Bei Ling ( Chinese 貝 嶺 , full name Huáng Bèilǐng黄貝嶺; born December 28, 1959 in Shanghai ) is a Chinese writer , poet , essayist and dissident . He was arrested by Chinese security agencies in 2000 after previously publishing dissident literature. Ling was released relatively quickly, however, as both well-known fellow writers such as Susan Sontag and Günter Grass and the American government campaigned for his release. In 2009, Bei Ling attracted the interest of the German media at the Frankfurt Book Fair . A conflict had arisen there regarding his participation in a symposium, which also included Chinese government representatives.
Life
Bei Ling was born in Shanghai and spent a few years there with his grandparents before the Cultural Revolution. His parents later took him to Beijing, where he attended school and university. At the end of 1988, Bei Ling traveled to the USA for the first time, where he met Ai Weiwei . When the student movement formed in China in 1989, Bei Ling got into a conflict of conscience: return home to join the demonstrations or stay in safe New York? While Liu Xiaobo , who later won the Nobel Peace Prize, with whom Bei Ling shared an apartment at the time, decided to return, Bei Ling stayed in the USA for the time being. In 1992 he founded the literary journal Tendency in Boston and since then has made massive efforts to publish it in China as well. In August 2000, the 13th edition of the Tendency was finally printed in Beijing. Bei Ling was arrested for illegal publication. Interventions by international fellow writers, especially Susan Sontag , and the American government two weeks later resulted in his release and immediate expulsion from China. Bei Ling has lived in exile abroad since the end of his detention in China . The United States and Taiwan became his adopted home during this period. In 2001, Bei Ling founded the independent Chinese PEN club together with Liu Xiaobo.
Publications
Ling's poetry, essays, and book reviews have been published in the New York Times , Los Angeles Times , Los Angeles Times Book Review, and the Harvard Review , among others . He himself was the founder and editor of the literary magazine Tendency , whose main target group was mainly Chinese exiles. He publishes the works of international modern authors such as Susan Sontag , Václav Havel and Paul Celan in the Chinese language at the Tendenzen publishing house . Since the Frankfurt Book Fair 2009, his essays have increasingly been published in German translation. On the occasion of the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize 2010 to the imprisoned Liu Xiaobo , Bei Ling published the book Sacrificed to Freedom - The Biography of Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Liu Xiaobo. In the spring of 2012, Suhrkamp will publish his memoirs "Expelled. About China", which Bei Ling presented to the public at the 2011 Frankfurt Book Fair.
