Beit Chaggai ( Hebrew בֵּית חַגַּי) is an Israeli settlement in the West Bank . The settlement was founded in 1984 and belongs to the Har Chevron regional administration . It is located south of Hebron .

Surname

The name of the settlement is made up of the first letters of the first names of three Jewish boys who were murdered in Hebron in 1980: C hanan Krauthammer ( Hebrew ח נן קרוטהמר), G ermine small ( Hebrew ג רשון קליין) and J aakow Zimmerman ( Hebrew י עקב צימרמן). These three letters also make up the name of the Prophet Chaggai in Hebrew .

history

Beit Chaggai was founded in 1984 by former classmates of the victims and their families, with the support of Amana, an organization associated with Gush Emunim .

In 1991, Beit Chaggai granted a 49-year lease to operate the largest quarry in the West Bank. The rental income accounts for almost 80% of the municipality's income.

In 2006 the village was expanded. Among other things, families from Kfar Darom who were evacuated from the Gaza Strip settled .

On August 31, 2010, the four residents, Yitzhak and Tali Ames, Kochava Even Chaim and Avishai Schindler, were shot dead by Palestinian terrorists while they were driving in a car near the settlement.

Youth village

The youth village was founded in 1989 when the settlement was expanded and new houses were built. The youth village was set up in the vacant houses and facilities from the founding period. The youth village of Beit Chaggai is home to around 50 boys between the ages of twelve and 18 who come from difficult family and social backgrounds.
