Bel Kaufman
Bel Kaufman (born May 10, 1911 in Berlin , † July 25, 2014 in Manhattan ) was a Ukrainian - American writer .
Life
Kaufman was born in Berlin to a Jewish family from Ukraine and raised in Odessa . Her maternal grandfather was Sholem Alejchem . In 1922 the family emigrated to the USA. She studied at Columbia University and Hunter College . Her best-known work is Up the Down Staircase ( Against the Current upstairs ), first published in 1964. In the same film adaptation of her novel, she played a supporting role.
She died at the age of 103.
Kaufman's first marriage was Sydney Goldstine, with whom they had two children. In her second marriage she was married to Sidney Gluck.
