A piece of Bel Paese

Bel Paese ( Italian for "beautiful country") is the brand name of a mild, semi-hard cheese . It is produced by the Galbani company from Lombardy in Italy , which has been part of the Lactalis group since the beginning of 2006 . The official name for this company branded cheese is Italico .

history

According to the manufacturer, the name Bel Paese should refer to the title of a book ( Il Bel Paese. Conversazioni sulle bellezze naturali - La geologia e la geografia fisica d 'Italia ) by Antonio Stoppani .

The cheese was conceived and developed as a product for the domestic market by the company's founder, Egidio Galbani , and was added to the already quite successful range in 1906. It enjoyed almost immediate worldwide success and played a key role in the growth of what would later become a large corporation . It was originally made in Melzo , a small town near Milan . Today it is produced in large quantities in both Italy and the USA .

Properties and taste

The taste of Bel Paese resembles some German butter cheese . Thanks to its good melting properties, it can be used on its own as a snack or dessert with fruit such as grapes or figs, as well as in warm cuisine, for example as a component of “four-cheese sauces”, on pizzas or gratins . Fruity wines are suitable as an accompanying drink.
