Bellefontaine (Saint-Ursanne)

Bellefontaine is a hamlet around 4 km west of Saint-Ursanne in the Swiss canton of Jura on the main road 249 .

At Bellfontaine there was an ironworks that manufactured weapons and telegraph wires until 1861 and that was founded in 1753 by the Basel prince-bishop Josef Wilhelm Rinck von Baldenstein . From 1869 to 1873, Cordier & Cie. 4000 cousin rifles manufactured in Bellefontaine .

From 1902 to 1972 an electric river power plant was operated on a side canal of the Doubs . Then the weir was dismantled upstream, so that the concreted river threshold is still there, but the gates and the pedestrian walkway have been removed.
