Josef Wilhelm Rinck von Baldenstein (born February 9, 1704 in Saignelégier ; † September 13, 1762 in Pruntrut ) was Prince-Bishop of the Principality of Basel from 1744 to 1762 .

Life

Rinck von Baldenstein was the son of the Prince-Bishop of Saint-Ursanne and later Councilor Josef Wilhelm Rinck von Baldenstein. Josef Wilhelm began his training at the Jesuit college in Pruntrut and then studied law in Freiburg im Breisgau . In 1728 he became a member of the prince-bishop's court council and in 1732 he was elected to the cathedral chapter . The appointment to the cathedral capitular (1735) and the ordination of priests (1736) followed immediately. The electoral prince-bishop took place in 1744, the confirmation of the Pope and the episcopal ordination took place in the same year.

After initially trying to take a neutral position between the German Empire and the Kingdom of France, he later approached France, to which he even provided a subsidy regiment from 1758 . His mercantilist economic policy promoted the infrastructure (road construction), the iron industry and forestry. He founded a theological faculty at the Jesuit college in Pruntrut.

During his reign, the Arlesheim Cathedral was fundamentally renovated, including the installation of the Silbermann organ.
