Simon-Nicolas de Montjoie-Hirsingue (also called by Froberg) (born September 22, 1693 in Hirsingen ; † April 5, 1775 in Pruntrut ) was Prince-Bishop of Basel from 1762–1775 .

Life

His father Franz Ignaz von Montjoye-Hirsingen served in the French army. Simon began his training at the Jesuit high school in Pruntrut and then studied in Strasbourg and at the Collegium Germanicum in Rome . In 1731 he was ordained a priest . In 1741 he became a canon and in 1744 a capitular . In 1762 he was elected bishop . Due to illness, he was only able to really fill his office until 1771. His last four years in office were already overshadowed by battles over his successor.

In terms of foreign policy, Simon oriented himself towards France. A regiment from the prince-bishopric served in the French army, although the prince-bishopric was represented in the imperial council.

Under his government in 1769 an exchange contract was concluded with the margraviate of Baden-Durlach in which the prince-bishop exchanged all his rights and goods in Binzen for the replacement of the remaining margravial rights in Schliengen , Mauchen and Steinenstadt .

In 1770 he carried out a census in the prince-bishopric, which resulted in a population of 55,235.
