Friedrich Ludwig Franz Freiherr von Wangen-Geroldseck (born March 12, 1727 in Wilwisheim , † October 11, 1782 in Pruntrut ) was Prince-Bishop of Basel from 1775 to 1782 .

Life

Ludwig was born as the son of Johann Ludwig Albrecht von Wangen-Geroldseck and Maria Anna Katharina von Schauenburg. His father was a councilor for the Lower Alsatian knighthood board.

As is customary for the elite of the principality, he began his training at the Jesuit college in Pruntrut. He then studied at the universities of Strasbourg, Rome and Paris. In 1745 he became Canon of Arlesheim and in 1751 the capitular . Further offices in the cathedral chapter followed ( custodian ; archdeacon ; cantor ). In 1766 he was ordained a priest . In 1775 he was elected bishop and in 1776 he was ordained a bishop.

Foreign policy

In his short term in office, the prince-bishop concluded two major contracts.

In 1779 he agreed on an exchange of parishes with the Archbishop of Besançon , Raymond de Durfort , which finally brought Elsgau with its capital Pruntrut - the residence of the Basel prince-bishops since the Reformation - from the Archdiocese of Besançon to the Diocese of Basel . In return, 29 Alsatian parishes were given to Besançon.

In 1780 an alliance treaty followed with the Kingdom of France under Louis XVI. , which granted France the right to intervene in the prince-bishopric and thus created the basis for the French occupation on April 28, 1792. With this treaty, the prince-bishop turned away from the Confederation and the empire .

He also succeeded in clearing the border with France by exchanging territory in the Doubs Valley .
