The Belluzzo steam turbine locomotive was the first steam turbine locomotive . It was built in 1908 by the Milanese company Società Anonima Officine Meccaniche based on designs by the developer Giuseppe Belluzzo .
history
Based on plans by Belluzzo, a triple-coupled tank locomotive from 1876 was converted into a steam storage locomotive . After the conversion , the test locomotive had two driven axles that were driven by exhaust turbines. This made it possible to keep the costs for the tests low and still provide proof of the functionality of steam turbines for the locomotive drive . The locomotive was in service until 1921.
The vehicle's consumption of fuel and water was on the same level as that of a normal steam locomotive. The smooth running of the machine was positively registered.
Constructive features
The locomotive had four steam turbines connected in series, which worked directly on the wheels via a single-stage gearbox with a ratio of 8: 1 . The steam was directed from the front right to the rear right, to the rear left, and then to the front left turbine. From there the steam was released into the atmosphere through the blowpipe .
Each turbine had a multi-ring impeller for different speeds and double blading for forward and reverse travel. The running of the turbines was regulated by changing the admission and the number of stages.
The turbine ran at a maximum of 2400 rpm. For reverse travel, the steam was directed through the turbines in the opposite direction via separate steam channels.
The steam consumption was 16 kg / PSh.
