Giuseppe Belluzzo (around 1928)

Giuseppe Belluzzo (born November 25, 1876 in Verona , † May 21, 1952 in Rome ; sometimes incorrectly given name as Bellonzo or Belutzo ) was an Italian engineer, inventor and fascist politician.

Live and act

Giuseppe Belluzzo was born in 1876 to the waiter Luigi Belluzzo and his wife Adelaide (née Francescatti). After completing school, he studied engineering. With his wife Lina (née Fazzi) he had three children, Nelly, Bruna and Dora. He fought for Italy in the First World War.

Turbine engineer and inventor

Belluzzo taught as Full Professor of Design of Thermal and Hydraulic Motors (Professore ordinario di Costruzione dei motori termici e idraulici) in Milan (at the Istituto Tecnico Superiore ), in Turin and in Rome (at the Scuola d'ingegneria di Roma ). He published more than 50 textbooks and specialist books, most of them on steam turbines and other fluid flow machines. Belluzzo's best-known book Le turbine a vapore (Eng .: the steam turbine ) has long been regarded as the standard work of turbo- machine construction beyond the borders of Italy.

Among other things, Albert Einstein dealt with Belluzzo's theses.

In addition to his work as a university lecturer, Belluzzo held various positions in various Italian engineering and technical organizations.

Belluzzo is considered to be the developer of the first large-scale steam turbines in Italy. These later served as a drive in large Italian warships, e.g. B. the ships of the Conte-di-Cavour and Littorio class . Belluzzo also worked on steam turbine locomotives and in 1907 developed the Belluzo locomotive, the world's first functioning prototype, as well as other locomotives based on it.

A development that made up only a small part of Belluzzo's life's work, but which - especially in retrospect - attracted a lot of attention were his alleged designs for a UFO- like disk-shaped aircraft . Belluzzo is therefore often mentioned as a supposed collaborator in the development of the mythical Reichsflugscheibe of the German National Socialists . However, his design documents were lost at the end of the war.

Politician

In addition to his career as an engineering scientist, Belluzzo was also politically active: He ran for the National Fascist Party (Partito Nazionale Fascista) and was elected to the Camera dei deputati in 1924 and 1929 . From 1925 to 1928 he was National Minister of Economic Affairs (Ministro dell'Economia Nazionale) and from 1928 to 1929 Minister of Public Education (Ministro della Pubblica Istruzione) in Mussolini's cabinet . In 1934 he was appointed senator . He later headed the Commission for National Education and Popular Culture from 1939 to 1943 (Commissione dell'educazione nazionale e della cultura popolare) .

Honors

Belluzzo has received various awards for his services as an engineer and politician:

In Verona and Rome today a street is named after him (Via Giuseppe Belluzzo) .
