Belmarsh Trackway

The Belmarsh Trackway was discovered in 2009 as a wooden boardwalk to cross a bog in Plumstead , a borough of London , and dates back to around 4000 BC. Chr. Dated. Wooden paths represent the oldest artificial path connections . The plank path was found adjacent to an old river bed at a depth of 4.7 m, under a two-meter-thick layer of peat , when the Belmarsh prison was expanded .

A much younger alder trunk with traces of a bronze ax was discovered in the excavation .

The oldest wooden structure in Greater London was previously the boardwalk in Silvertown , which dates from 3340-2910 BC. Is dated.
