The Belmond Andean Explorer is a luxury tourist and hotel train that operates in Peru .

The train is operated jointly by PeruRail and the British Belmond Group, which specializes in luxury travel. It operates in two connections:

  • from Arequipa via Juliaca , a branch trip to Puno and on to Cusco over a distance of 688 km, which takes three days and two nights, and
  • from Puno via Juliaca to Cusco, a trip that is one day shorter.

The train travels at a maximum of 48 km / h and is stopped at night so that passengers don't miss a view. In Cusco, the train uses the Wanchaq station .

The train's wagons were built in Australia in the Queensland Rail workshops in Townsville for the Great South Pacific Express in the late 1990s . When this offer was discontinued in 2003, the cars were initially parked for a long time. The Belmond Group bought the vehicles and transported them to Peru in 2016. In Arequipa they were technically adapted for operation in Peru and the interior fittings were renewed in Cusco.

Class 650 locomotive

The train is usually drawn by two diesel locomotives of the series 650 from the 1970s. The train carries a maximum of 16 cars . The train has a total of 48 seats for passengers. These are divided into compartments in eight sleeping cars . Their cabins all have a shower room. Four classes are offered:

  • Deluxe Double Bed (two beds side by side, 13 m, own seating area, several window axes) - two cabins
  • Junior Double Bed (two beds side by side, 13 m, own seating area, several window axes) - six cabins
  • Twin Bed (two beds side by side, smaller cabin, one window axis) - 11 cabins
  • Bunk Bed (two beds on top of each other, one window axis) - five cabins

In addition to the sleeping car, the train has two dining cars , a bar car , a spa car and, at the end, a pulpit car with an open viewing platform.

About 30 people take care of the guests. For safety reasons, too, the train is constantly accompanied by road vehicles.
