Belohina inexpectata is so far the only species of the described Beetle family of Belohinidae .
features
Beetle
The beetles are 14 to 16 millimeters long. Their body is very convex and hairless. When viewed from above, the head is not completely covered by the pronotum . The compound eyes do not have a canthus . The membranous labrum is hidden below the frontal plate ( clypeus ). The sensor bases are covered from above. The antennae are ten-segmented and have a three-segment cup-shaped (cupuliform) club. The mandibles are short and wide and have a single point. They are curved mesially and have no mola . To the maxilla are Galea and lacinia made significantly. The indentations of the hips ( coxes ) of the front legs are open on the inside. The thigh rings (trochanters) are hidden or missing. The rails ( tibia ) of the front legs have one or more distinct teeth or lobes. On the rails of the middle legs there are oblique grooves or ridges in front of the apex. The scutellum is well developed. The hind wings are severely receded or absent. There are six visible sternites on the abdomen. The second is a lateral sternite and is obscured or only partially visible. The tracheal openings are formed in the first through eighth segment in the pleural membranes. The aedeagus of the males is symmetrical and has two lobes.
Distribution and way of life
The beetles are known so far only from the type series from southern Madagascar , which was collected in March. The way of life of the animals, like the larvae, is completely unknown.
Taxonomy and systematics
Renaud Maurice Adrien Paulian originallydescribed the genus Belohina within the scarab beetles (Scarabaeidae) and placed them in its own subfamily, whichshould be closely relatedto the Aphodiinae . However, even then he recognized similarities in the structure of the Aedeagus compared to the dung beetles (Geotrupidae). Later he put the group into a family of their own.
