Below the Salt is the fourth album of British folk - rock band Steeleye Span . It was released in 1972 by Chrysalis under the order number CHR 1008, a later CD was released by Shanachie Records (Just records Babelsberg).

At the beginning of 1972 the group had to deal with personnel changes again. At the time, she was one of the most popular folk bands in Britain, and she had to deal with the departures of Ashley Hutchings and Martin Carthy . After the new line-up by Rick Kemp ( bass ) and Bob Johnson (guitar), the group only appeared again at major festivals in late summer with a completely new repertoire.

In November of the same year, the fourth studio album entitled "Below the Salt" was released. It was particularly clear that at that time there was hardly a band that combined authenticity, creativity and a sense for contemporary forms of performance in their arrangements of traditional music to such an extent as Steeleye Span .

With the turn to the early forms of folk , the group made a very decisive development. This is also vouched for by the title and cover of the album, which also refer to a medieval custom: The seating arrangement at the dining table was based on the salt (a very valuable spice at the time), which found its place in the middle of the table; "Below the salt" usually only sat the servants and servants.

The tendency from the earlier, somewhat freer and romantically tinged way of playing of the folk to the stricter form of medieval chant is particularly expressed in “ Gaudete ”, a religious song from a Finnish song collection from 1582 “Piae Cantiones” , and the church modes of “Rosebud” in June ”and“ Sheep-Crock and Black Dog ”.

All songs on the album were traditional , edited by the group. The album reached number 43 on the UK album charts.
