Belvelly Castle ( Irish Caisleán Bhéal to Bhealaigh ) is a Tower House from the 14th or 15th century in the small village Belvelly in Irish County Cork . The castle is across from the only road bridge that connects Fota Island and Great Island , on which Cobh sits .

The castle was originally the Anglo-Norman family Hodnett build, but in the 14th century they took over the family De la Rochelle (Roche) and De Barra (De Barry). The Hodnetts later leased their land back. Some sources state that Sir Walter Raleigh occupied the castle in the 16th century before it was recaptured by the De Barra family and garrisoned by Roger Boyle, 1st Earl of Orrery , in the Irish Confederate Wars in the mid-17th century was occupied.

The castle was in ruins by the 19th century. During World War I , more people visited the castle ruins as local coachmen brought sailors to the castle whose ships were docked in nearby Queenstown (Cobh) . Presumably these sailors thought they were visiting Blarney Castle and its Blarney Stone . During the state of emergency (1939-1945) in World War II , the castle was occupied by the Irish army and was a little rebuilt.

At the beginning of the 21st century, the castle was sold and restored in mid-2016 after obtaining a building permit for use as a private house.
