Bembix is a genus of digger wasps (Spheciformes) from the Crabronidae family. The worldwide distributed genus comprises about 300 species. The main distribution area is in Australia with 80 species and the Ethiopian region with 90 species. 64 species are distributed inthe Palearctic , 16 species occur in Europe, two also in Central Europe, only the gyro wasp ( Bembix rostrata ) also occurs in Germany.

features

The most important feature of the genus is the reduction of the middle point eye ( ocellus ) to a narrow, angular line. You can only guess a lens in a few species. Further characteristics are the reduction of the palps to two labial palps and four maxillary palps . The labrum is often elongated like a beak.

Way of life

The nests are single or multi-celled and with some species, in addition to the actual brood nest, false nests are also built. The eggs are laid either on the first prey or in the still empty cell. Then it is placed upright or lying on the floor, in the middle of the cell or leaning against the rear cell wall at an angle. The brood is supplied with bees, wasps, botflies and ant lions .

Since the nests are often created in society and the same places are populated over several years, the species of this genus have been well researched.
