The Bembropidae are a family of fish from the order of the perch-like (Perciformes), which occurs with over 20 species in the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Traditionally placed as a subfamily in the family of the beak fish (Percophidae), the group is in the current revision of the bony fish systematics by Betancur-R. and colleagues raised to the rank of an independent family within the perch-like family.
features
The different species of the Bembropidae reach body lengths of 10.5 to 35 cm. Your body is elongated, the dorsal fin is divided into two parts, the anal fin is long. The lower jaw is always longer than the upper jaw and protrudes. Of the six spines of the dorsal fin, only the first two are very close together at the base. The scales are ctenoid . At the front of the sideline , some scales form a conspicuous keel.
- Fin formula : dorsal VI / 13-18, anal 15-20, caudal 10-11.
