Ben Hill County Jail is a Grade II listed former prison in Fitzgerald , Georgia .
The county's two-story prison was built in 1909 by JR MacEachron in a T-shaped neo-Romanesque style. The masonry connection of the outer walls has runners made of red brick . The newer portico is a high floor, carried by rectangular wooden posts and has as its crown a balcony on the second floor. The windows of the south-facing front facade are in the Palladian style and have stepped lintels .
Ben Hill County Jail was the first prison in Ben Hill County, established in 1906 . The original portico and the crenellated tower are no longer preserved today. The prison was in use until the early 1980s when it was cleared for an extensive renovation . Ben Hill County Jail was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 26, 1982 as a Historic Monument .
