Ben Lui ( Scottish Gaelic : Beinn Laoigh ) is a mountain in the southern Highlands of Scotland . Five ridges meet at its summit. Between these ridges are four mountain basins , including the Coire Gaothaich in the northeast of the mountain.
geography
Ben Lui is the tallest and most famous of the four Munros south of Glen Lochy . The other peaks of the mountain group are called Beinn a 'Chleibh , Ben Oss and Beinn Dubhchraig . The area of the mountain group is protected as a National Nature Reserve . The cliffs and outcrops are particularly humid, and the soil is less acidic than the surrounding area. Therefore a lush vegetation can develop. Mosses , lichens and saxifrages are particularly striking.
A pond on the slope of Ben Lui has been identified as the source of the Tay , the longest river in Scotland.
Accesses
The shortest and easiest climb is from the north, from Glen Lochy. It begins at the confluence of the Eas Daimh in the Lochy River. A path totaling three kilometers in length leads up through the forest and over the northwest ridge to the summit.
Another option is the path from Beinn a 'Chleibh, which is two kilometers to the southwest.
Access from the east gives hikers access to the most famous natural wonder on the mountain, the round mountain basin Coire Gaothaich . You can start the hike either at the Lower Railway Station in Tyndrum or at the Dalrigh Field in Strath Fillan, the wide valley of the River Fillan . Both paths meet and follow Glen Cononish to the base of the mountain. From there the path runs along the north ridge, Stob Garbh , to the summit. The distance is about 9 km. This route is tricky in winter, often well into April, because the upper part of it tends to be extremely icy. Orientation between the rocks above Coire Gaothaich is also very difficult when visibility is poor.
Coming from the south, from Loch Lomond , Ben Lui can be reached by following the Glen Fyne uphill for about ten kilometers . A southern route allows you to hike Ben Oss and even Beinn Dubhcraig in one go. Well-fit hikers can manage all four Munros in the group in one day, if arrival and departure in the valley can be arranged.
