Benjamin D. Santer
Benjamin D. Santer (born June 3, 1955 ) is an American climatologist who works at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory . His specialty is the statistical analysis of climatological data and the investigation of climatologically effective factors. Santer is one of the most respected scientists in the world. In 2002 he was the twelfth most cited author on global warming. He was the coordinating lead author of the 8th chapter of the first part of the second IPCC assessment report from 1995.
Life and career
Santer grew up in the state of Maryland and moved with his parents to Germany at the age of 11, where he attended the Cornwall School in Dortmund run by the British Army for eight years . He received his BSc in environmental science. His Ph.D. received his Climatology degree from the University of East Anglia in 1987 . He then worked for five years at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg, where he developed and applied statistical methods for evaluating climate data in collaboration with Klaus Ferdinand Hasselmann .
Awards
In 1998, Santer was awarded the MacArthur Fellowship for his research into the human contribution to global warming . He also received the Ernest Orlando Lawrence Award ; he was honored with the "Distinguished Scientist Fellowship" by the United States Department of Energy and received the Norbert Gerbier-MUMM Award from the World Meteorological Organization . In 2011 he became an AGU Fellow and a member of the National Academy of Sciences .
