Abbot Benedikt Müntnich (2013)

Benedikt Müntnich (born October 20, 1952 in Treis-Karden as Arnold Müntnich ) is a Benedictine abbot and emeritus abbot of Maria Laach Abbey .

Life

Benedikt Müntnich was born in Treis on the Moselle in 1952 into a family of winemakers and was christened Arnold. In 2014, he wrote about his early career in a commemorative publication, how he leafed through the Bible as a preschooler and had the stories told about the pictures. But he did not hide the fact that as a ten- or twelve-year-old he had not memorized a Bible text as instructed by the teacher and therefore received a five in religion in his half-year report. Nevertheless, he felt the vocation to religious life early on, in which reading the Bible encouraged him.

In his hometown, Müntnich went to elementary and secondary school before he attended the commercial school in Cochem . Then he went to the archiepiscopal evening high school in Neuss to do the Abitur. In 1974 he entered the Benedictine Abbey of Maria Laach as a novice , received the religious name Benedict and henceforth studied philosophy and theology in Trier and Salzburg. In 1981 Benedikt Müntnich was ordained a priest by Bishop Hermann Josef Spital in Maria Laach. He was then master of novices for 20 years . He also became chairman of the novice masters conference of the German-speaking monasteries.

After the resignation of Abbot Anno Schoenen , Müntnich was elected 49th Abbot of Maria Laach for twelve years and was blessed for this office on November 7th by Bishop Reinhard Marx . Among the guests at the abbot's consecration were representatives of the Orthodox Church in Germany, the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland and the Old Catholic Church in Germany.

Abbot Müntnich was considered successful both inside and outside the monastery, having laid the foundations for the economic stabilization of Maria Laach since 2002 with support from the region and with the help of the Friends of the Benedictine Abbey of Maria Laach, which he founded during his term of office. Thanks to his commitment, urgently needed construction work was carried out. A smaller group of monks is said to have accused him of having "opened the monastery too much".

In the abbot election in September 2014, Müntnich achieved a majority, which, however, did not seem clear enough to him to run for the next round of voting. The monastery community could not agree on a new abbot. Gernot Mittler , the chairman of the Association of Friends of Benedictine Abbey Maria Laach, which had 1,600 members at the time, regretted that Abbot Benedict was not re-elected and said on request: “The enormous, positive development of the past few years is his merit. I hope that there will be no reverse development now. ”In July 2015, the association elected Benedikt Müntnich as an honorary member with one vote against and three abstentions.

Benedikt Müntnich has lived in the St. Hildegard Abbey near Rüdesheim am Rhein since 2014 . Prior-Administrator Father Andreas Werner said in a speech at the general meeting of the Association of Friends of the Benedictine Abbey of Maria Laach on July 1, 2017: “Abbot em. Benedikt Müntnich plans to return to Maria Laach from the Benedictine Abbey of St. Hildegard in Rüdesheim-Eibingen at the end of the year. I encouraged him to take this step. "
