Collegium Marianum in Neuss

The Collegium Marianum in Bonn , an institution of the Archdiocese of Cologne , is a pre-seminar for spiritual professions.

The Collegium Marianum I was founded by the Jesuits in 1616 as a Latin school in Neuss . In terms of its orientation, it was a small seminar , but in the institutional scheme of the Archdiocese of Cologne it was not run as a seminar, but as an archbishop's school.

The Marianum II was re-established as a seminarium in 1852 by the Archbishop of Cologne, Johannes Cardinal von Geißel , and became the sponsorship of the Archdiocese. During the Second World War the college was closed. The Marianum III was opened in 1949/50 as a center for the first and second educational pathways. Its shape is a boarding school .

On June 26, 2006, at the end of the 2005/2006 school year, the Collegium Marianum moved from Neuss to Bonn in accordance with the decision of the Archbishop of Cologne, Joachim Cardinal Meisner , where it became an independent institution with the Archbishop's Theological Convict Collegium from August 1, 2006 Albertinum in Bonn is housed in the same building on Adenauerallee.

The Collegium Marianum offers those interested the opportunity to obtain the Abitur on the first or second educational path and to prepare for a career as a clergyman, lay theologian, pedagogue or another academic profession.

The Marians want to test themselves for a spiritual life through a life in community, which is characterized by common worship and hours of worship. Discussions with like-minded people, information about career prospects in the church and numerous encounters with people in various spiritual and secular professions and functions are intended to help shape one's own professional perspective. Spiritual accompaniment should help to make an informed career decision.

Prelate Johannes Wilhelm Becker (born 1911 in the city of Blankenberg / Sieg) was the first director of the Collegium Marianum in his new function as a school for students in the second educational path . After his ordination on February 4, 1937, he was an assistant at the Collegium Marianum until its closure in 1939. The strong revival of Christianity after 1945 in the face of the war tragedy and post-war misery led to an enormous increase in those interested in secondary education to work in church service and in educational professions. Cardinal Frings appointed J. W. Becker as director of Marianum III, under which the Collegium was expanded into a center for secondary education (Archbishop's Evening High School in 1949/50, Archbishop's Friedrich Spee College in 1963). In 1966 alone, the 350th year since the Marianum I was founded, 166 graduates achieved university entrance qualifications. The Konvikt, which used to be housed at Breite Straße 96 together with the evening high school in Neuss, moved to the building at Preußenstraße 66 in 1962. In the second half of the 1960s, it housed up to 350 pupils and students. Affiliated to the Collegium Marianum were up to twelve study houses of religious orders. Prelate Becker died on July 5, 1971 at the age of 60.

In the same year Karl Kabus was appointed as his successor. Kabus, born in 1926 and ordained a priest in 1953, was previously a religion teacher at the Quirinus Gymnasium in Neuss (1962–1970 / 71). He was followed in 1979 by Msgr. Johannes Börsch, 44 , who was in charge until 1992, the year he was appointed Vicar General of the Apostolic Administrator of Kazakhstan in Central Asia. During his time the evening grammar school was closed and the chapel, which was designed by Professor Heinz Mack as a "total work of art", was expanded.

In 1992 Robert Kramer (born 1935; ordained a priest in 1967) became director of the house. Kramer, previously a student chaplain in Bonn, worked at the Marianum until 2000. The last director of the college in Neusser Preußenstraße was Pastor Herbert Ullmann. He was responsible for the fate of the house until the Marianum moved to Bonn in the summer of 2006. Herbert Ullmann, who was introduced to the office of district dean in 2012, was able to make the knowledge he had acquired in the Marianum available as director of the Collegium Albertium in Bonn.

Thomas Bernards became the first director of the Collegium Marianum in Bonn, where the Konvikt shares the building with the Collegium Albertinum seminary. Under his direction, some students are currently preparing for the Abitur, who are attending the Kardinal-Frings-Gymnasium in Beuel or the advanced training college of the city of Bonn.
