Richard Schulte Staade in Kevelaer

Richard Schulte Staade (born January 25, 1932 in Werden an der Ruhr ; † January 13, 2020 in Kevelaer ) was a German Roman Catholic priest and theologian . Schulte Staade was pastor of the Marienbasilika in Kevelaer from 1974 to 2006 and pilgrimage director of the Kevelaer pilgrimage.

Life

Richard Schulte Staade was the son of a farming family in Werden an der Ruhr. In 1936 the family had to move to Lüdinghausen. After the end of the war, he broke off attending grammar school and helped out on the local farm and attended an agricultural college. After meeting Michael Keller , Bishop of Münster , he decided to become a priest in 1955. Schulte Staade made up his Abitur at the Marianum in Neuss and studied philosophy , theology and art history with Hans Sedlmayr in Münster and Munich .

He was ordained a priest on June 21, 1963 and was initially a chaplain in the parishes of St. Georg in Bocholt and St. Jakobi in Coesfeld . In 1966 he became district vicar for the Episcopal Commissariat Niederrhein in Wesel and in 1971 cathedral vicar at the high cathedral in Münster , head of the adult pastoral care department, head and advisory board of the family pastoral care group, deputy head of the pastoral care department in the episcopal general vicariate and diocesan commissioner for Catholic marriage and family counseling in the Diocese of Münster .

From 1975 he worked as a pastor in Kevelaer, parish St. Marien and rector of the pilgrimage. In 1976 Schulte Staade became dean in the Deanery Goch and in 1982 Honorary Chapter Chapter in St. Paulus Cathedral in Münster. From 1985 he was a member of the priestly council and non-resident cathedral chapter . In 1988 he was the Definitor in the Deanery of Goch and from 1989 an honorary consistorial councilor of the Apostolic Exarchy for Ukrainians of the Byzantine Rite in Germany and Scandinavia . In 1992 Pope John Paul II named him Honorary Prelate of His Holiness . Also in 1992 he became Honorary Dome Capitular at the Cathedral of Our Lady in Luxembourg and from 1993 Grand Archimandrite of the Patriarchate of Antioch and the entire Orient. In 1994 Schulte Staade was again Definitor in the deanery of Goch and in 1996 honorary canon of Christoffelkathedraal in the Dutch diocese of Roermond . From 2000 he was also Patriarchal Exarch of the Patriarchate of Antioch and of the entire Orient. In 2002 Schulte Staade was made an honorary citizen of the city of Kevelaer. In February 2006 he left Kevelaer; since then he has been Parochus emeritus in Wesel. In April 2007, the Grand Master of the Ecumenical Order of Lazarus, Duke of Brissac, appointed him to the Lazarus Order Chaplain in the Humanitarian Grand Priory Europe; he accepted him, together with the clerical protector of the Lazarus order, Patriarch Gregorios III., in Krefeld-Hüls in the Lazarus order and presented the order insignia. From 1959 he was a member of the KDSt.V. Burgundia Munich in the CV .

At the ceremony of the city of Kevelaer on the occasion of the 375th anniversary of the pilgrimage, the honorary citizen gave a highly acclaimed speech on May 4, 2017. Among other things, he reported how it took nine years of effort to bring about the Pope's visit to Kevelaer on May 2, 1987. He expressed his deepest appreciation for St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who was also in Kevelaer in 1987. He also told other, smaller and larger events from his tenure, including a. of the fact that once an RAF terrorist broke away from political crime in Kevelaer. Schulte Staade was an honorary member of Pax Christi Kevelaer , remembering his services to the memory of the Pax Christi events there in 1948 and the subsequent congresses in 1958, 1973 and 1988. The new pilgrimage site from the 1980s was named after his suggestion Forum "Pax Christi".

A lasting testimony to his work in Kevelaer is the orthodox Johanneskapelle, the construction of which goes back to his initiative and for which he has campaigned for many years. The prerequisite for the construction was the consent of the bishops of various autocephalous Orthodox churches to use this chapel for liturgical celebrations. In 1989 Schulte Staade was able to achieve the signing of such an agreement. On October 31, 1992, the chapel was ceremoniously set up in the presence of numerous Orthodox and Catholic dignitaries, an example of the ecumenical cooperation that was very important to Schulte Staade.
