Benedikt Steiger
Benedikt Steiger (born February 19, 1810 in Wiener Neustadt ; † July 12, 1889 there ) was an Austrian Cistercian and abbot .
life and work
Anton Joseph Steiger joined the Neukloster Abbey in 1829 and took the religious name Benedict . He made solemn profession in 1832 and was ordained a priest in 1833. Then he taught at the monastery high school, from 1851 as its director. From 1857 to 1880 he was abbot of the monastery. Since he was unable to remedy the financial situation of the monastery in spite of intensive efforts, he asked in 1879 to incorporate his monastery (as a priory) into the Heiligenkreuz Abbey and in 1880 renounced his abbot status.
