The Benelli 750 Sei was the first series-produced six-cylinder motorcycle. “Sei” - pronounced “se-i” without a diphthong  - is the Italian numeral for six. The presentation took place in October 1972, production started in 1974 and sales to Germany started in 1975.

The entrepreneur Alejandro de Tomaso had Benelli bought in 1971 and promoted the development of Sci. The "Sei" was developed with designers from the former Benelli racing department, above all Pierpalo Prampolini. They expanded the four-cylinder engine of the 1973 Benelli 500 Quattro , a copy of the engine of the Honda CB 500 Four , by adding two cylinders. 3200 Benelli 750 Sei were built and around 300 of them were sold in Germany. Well-kept specimens are now (2013) traded above the then price of DM 10,000.

The 620 mm wide engine, built transversely into the double-loop tubular frame, had an overhead camshaft with chain drive. The primary drive ran via an intermediate shaft and the generator was located behind the cylinder block. The engine was 620 mm wide, narrower than a BMW boxer engine. The mixture was prepared by three 26 mm Dell'Orto gasifiers, each of which supplied two adjacent cylinders via forked suction pipes. The power was 63 hp (46 kW) at 8500 min -1 , the maximum torque of 55.9  Nm was measured at 4000 min -1 achieved. Originally, 29 mm carburetor outlets were planned, which would have enabled 75 hp (55 kW), but the German emissions regulations could not be complied with. The 75 hp version was mainly delivered to the USA. With the Model 1977, 24-mm-gasifier were used, which is now a power of 58 HP (43 kW) at 8500 min -1 offered. In other countries, the Sei - like many other motorcycle models - was offered with slightly different technical data.

The motorcycle had a 6-in-6 exhaust system; left and right three exhaust pipes were led. The telescopic fork came from Marzocchi , the front Brembo double disc brake had a disc diameter of 280 mm, which was later increased to 300 mm, the Grimeca drum brake at the rear had a drum diameter of 200 mm.

The petrol tank held 22 liters, the consumption (according to CUNA ) was 7.9 liters per 100 km. Honda and Kawasaki subsequently also developed six-cylinder motorcycles, the Honda CBX and the Kawasaki Z 1300 . These motorcycles found only a few buyers because six-cylinder motorcycles were perceived as too heavy, unwieldy and too expensive to buy and maintain.

The successor model was the Benelli 900 Sei. The displacement was increased to 906 cc which is a power of 80 HP (59 kW) at 8400 min -1 revealed. The cylinder bore was 60 mm, the piston stroke 53.4 mm. In addition, the 900 was equipped with a 6 in 2 exhaust system. The 900 Sei was built from 1978 to 1989. The performance was correspondingly higher with the more powerful engine than with the 750 : 193 km / h top speed, acceleration from 0-100 km / h in 4.6 seconds. The brake system now has a double disc at the front and a single disc at the rear. The construction was similar to that of the Moto Guzzi Le Mans with integral brake. (See also Integral ABS .) With this construction, when the foot brake is operated, a disc on the front wheel is also braked at the same time. In the second and third series, the motorcycle was delivered with a cockpit fairing.
