Bani Suwaif or Beni Suef ( Coptic Ⲡⲁⲛⲓⲥⲱ ϥ panisuf ; Arabic بني سويف Bani Suwaif , DMG Banī Suwaif , also Beni Sueif , Beni Swaif , Beni Sweif and Beni Suaif ) is thecapital of the governorate of Bani Suwaif , Egypt, on the left bank of the Nile and about 115 km south of Cairo .

Bani Suwaif is an important agricultural center that developed from a small village at the end of the 19th century and now has a population of 218,472 (2008 calculation); 211,173 inhabitants (2006 census). Originally famous for its linen factories in the Middle Ages , cotton spinning and carpet production dominate here today. The alabaster that is quarried in the nearby hills is also known.

Near Bani Suwaif are the Meidum pyramid and the Fayum oasis . 15 kilometers west of Bani Suwaif is also the rubble mound of an ancient Egyptian city, which the Greeks called Herakleopolis Magna .

Since the Egyptian Revolution in 2011 and due to the associated economic hardship, the millennia-old relics have been the subject of grave robbery and the associated destruction to an extreme extent.

The city is one of three locations in Egypt where Siemens is currently building the world's largest combined cycle power plants , each with 4.8 GW of installed capacity .
