Benizelos (Mpenizelos) Rouphos ( Greek Μπενιζέλος Ρούφος , * 1795 in Patras ; † March 18, 1868 ibid) was a Greek politician and prime minister .

Independence fighter and family

The son of the freedom fighter Athanasios Kanakaris was named after his grandfather, Benizelo Roufus, who came from Sicily . His sons Athanassios Kanakaris-Rouphos and Georgios Rouphos were also mayors of Patras and ministers. His son Angelos Rouphos was a member of parliament and defeated his older brother Athanassios Kanakaris-Rouphos in the election of mayor of Patras in 1899.

During the independence fights from 1821 to 1828 he was also a freedom fighter in a company in Patras. During the reign of Ioannis Kapodistrias , he became governor of Elis and later of Syros in 1828 .

Political career

In 1832 Rouphos was appointed senator . In 1835 he was appointed government advisor. He later became Minister of the Interior in the government of Georgios Koundouriotis (March to October 1848). In addition, he was temporarily foreign minister.

Between 1855 and 1858 he was mayor of his hometown Patras. During his tenure as mayor, he laid the foundation stone for the community hospital and partly foregoed his income to build an aqueduct and roads.

After the deposition of King Otto I , he belonged from January 30 to October 30, 1863, together with Konstantinos Kanaris and Dimitrios Voulgaris, a triumvirate to exercise the regency. He was also Prime Minister for the first time from May 10, 1863.

From February 9 to March 14, 1865 and from December 11, 1865 to June 21, 1866, he was again Prime Minister.
