Alexandros Koumoundouros
Alexandros Koumoundouros ( Greek Ἀλέξανδρος Κουμουνδούρος ; * 1817 in Zarnata ( Mani (Peloponnese) ); † February 26, 1883 in Athens ) was a Greek politician and prime minister .
Family and studies
He was the son of Spirodonas-Galanis Koumoundouros, des Bey during the last period of Ottoman rule in Mani. After the end of the Greek Revolution (1821-1829) he went to school in Nafplion . He then completed a law degree at the University of Athens . In 1841 he took part in the revolution in Crete , although he thought it was a pointless undertaking at the time. He later became a prosecutor at the Kalamata Tribunal . In 1843 he married Ennra Greolis , with whom he fathered 4 children.
Political career
Member of Parliament and Speaker of Parliament
Koumoundouros began his political career in 1853 with the election to the National Assembly (Voulí ton Ellínon) . There he represented the interests of the constituency of Messinia . In 1855 he was elected President of the National Assembly.
minister
A year later, in 1856, he became Minister of Economics in the first cabinet of Dimitrios Voulgaris . He also held this office in the cabinet of Athanasios Miaoulis from 1857 to 1862.
After King Otto I was deposed on October 23, 1862, Prime Minister Voulgaris appointed him Minister of Justice in the transitional government that was in office until February 21, 1863. After the parliamentary elections of 1863 he remained Minister of Justice and took over the Ministry of Religion and Education after the early elections in 1864 that were necessary due to political instability. He later became Minister of the Interior.
Ten times Prime Minister
On March 14, 1865 Koumoundouros became Prime Minister for the first time. He initially held this office until November 1, 1865 and then became Prime Minister again on November 18, 1865, after two very brief transitional governments by Epaminondas Deligiorgis and Dimitrios Voulgaris . However, he had to resign from this office a week later on November 25, 1865.
After winning the parliamentary elections of 1866, he became Prime Minister for the third time on December 30, 1866. This time his term of office lasted until January 1, 1868.
On December 15, 1870, he was appointed Prime Minister for the fourth time. In his cabinet, which was in office until November 9, 1871, he took over both the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of War.
In August 1875 he was re-elected President of the National Assembly. However, as early as October 27, 1875, after winning the parliamentary elections, he became Prime Minister for the fifth time in a government that was in office until December 8, 1876.
Of the three elections held in 1876, Koumoundouros was able to win two, so that he became Prime Minister for the sixth time on December 13, 1876. He held this office until March 10, 1877. From June 1 to 7, 1877 and from September 14, 1877 to November 2, 1878, he was again Prime Minister.
After winning the National Assembly elections, on November 7, 1878, he was again Prime Minister of a government that remained in office until March 22, 1880.
For the last and tenth time, Koumoundouros was Prime Minister from October 25, 1880 to March 15, 1882. During this last term of office he also achieved his greatest political success when, after the establishment of diplomatic relations with Turkey in 1881, he joined the region of Thessaly and today's regional district of Arta with the Greek motherland. Shortly after the Anschluss, he called new elections to allow the new territories to send representatives to the National Assembly. Contrary to expectations, these MPs elected the opposition candidate for President of the National Assembly. For this reason Koumoundouros resigned from his office as Prime Minister on March 15, 1882 and at the same time said goodbye to politics.
