Dimitrios Voulgaris
Dimitrios Voulgaris ( Greek : Δημήτριος Βούλγαρης) (* December 20, 1802 on the island of Hydra ; † January 10, 1878 in Athens ) was a Greek politician and prime minister of his country.
Independence fighter
Voulgaris joined the freedom fighters after the outbreak of the Greek War of Independence in 1821 and as such took part in the sea battles against the armed forces of the Ottoman Empire .
After independence as a Greek state on April 15, 1827, as a member of the National Assembly (Voulí ton Ellínon), he became a bitter opponent of the then governor Ioannis Kapodistrias , who was assassinated on October 9, 1831. Later he was temporarily mayor of Hydra. Because of his wearing of the typical hydriatic clothing he was called "Tsoumpes".
Minister and eight-time Prime Minister
Voulgaris began his real political career in 1843 when he was appointed senator . In 1847 he became Minister of the Navy in the cabinet of Kitsos Tzavelas .
On October 11, 1855, he was appointed Prime Minister for the first time by King Otto I during the Crimean War . He initially held this office until November 25, 1857.
In October 1862 he was involved in a coup against King Otto I. After his dismissal, he became Prime Minister of a provisional government that was in office until February 21, 1863 on October 23, 1862.
In the period that followed, Voulgaris was Prime Minister six more times (November 6, 1863 - March 17, 1864, November 15-18, 1865, June 21 - December 30, 1866, February 6, 1868 - February 6, 1869, 6. January 20 - July 20, 1872 and February 21, 1874 - May 8, 1875).
His reigns were marked by corruption . Finally, the political manifesto directed against King George I "Who is the culprit?" (Τις πταίει?) Of his former Foreign Minister Charilaos Trikoupis in the daily newspaper "Καιροί" led to the King dismissing Prime Minister Voulgaris on May 8, 1875 and as his successor Trikoupis appointed. Several supporters of Voulgaris were subsequently charged with corruption. Voulgaris himself died on January 10, 1878 after a long illness.
