List of rose varieties

The rose variety 'Benjamin Britten' (syn. 'AUSencart') is an intensely red colored, often flowering shrub rose , which David Austin bred in 1992 and introduced in the UK in 2001 . Benjamin Britten belongs to the Leander hybrid subgroup of English roses . The rose was bred from the apricot-colored shrub rose 'Charles Austin' ('AUSfather') and a seedling.

education

The dense, upright rose 'Benjamin Britten' forms a compact, strong shrub with long shoots. In warmer climates, the rose can be pulled into a vigorously growing climbing rose . In our latitudes, the rose plant is about 125 cm high and 100 cm wide. The flowers , which are arranged individually, sometimes in small clusters, consist of around 40 slightly curved petals and form a large, bowl-shaped flower that gradually opens into a bowl-shaped rosette. The loosely double flowers are 10 to 12 cm in size and are somewhat prone to rain. The rose 'Benjamin Britten' is characterized by an extremely unusual color for English roses. The young flowers appear in a dark salmon-colored red, which later turns into an intense orange-red. The rose has elongated, medium green, dull leaves. The rose is characterized by a long-lasting, intense fruity scent of candies , pears and grapes .

The remontant rose variety is hardy ( USDA climate zones 6b to 9b). It blooms continuously from summer to autumn and is resistant to the well-known rose diseases.

The brightly colored rose is suitable as a contrasting planting of flower beds, cottage gardens and as a solitary shrub. The rose 'Benjamin Britten' is also used in floristry - especially in natural flower arrangements.

The rose variety is shown in numerous rosariums and gardens around the world, including the Denver Botanic Garden, Rosaholic's Southern California Garden, Rosarium Petrović , Rosarium Winschoten, Victoria State Rose Garden and the Europa-Rosarium Sangerhausen .

breeding

In 1992 David Austin selected 'Charles Austin', which he bred in 1973, as a parent strain and crossed it with pollen from an unnamed seedling. The seeds produced in this way were sown in January 1993. From this seedling population, a seedling was selected from which six buds were grafted onto the 'Laxa' rootstock. The seedling, named 'Ausencart', was further tested and selected for further reproduction in 1995.

Naming

The rose was named after the English pianist and composer Benjamin Britten .
