Benjamin Peffer Lamberton (born February 25, 1844 in Cumberland County , Pennsylvania , † June 9, 1912 in Washington, DC ) was a rear admiral in the United States Navy who served in the Spanish-American War .

Life

Lamberton was born to James Findlay Lamberton and Elizabeth Peffer. He attended Carlisle High School and Dickinson Preparatory School before he was from 1862 for three years at Dickinson College . He was a member of the Belles Lettres Literary Society.

His further training took place at the Naval Academy . On September 21, 1861 he was appointed midshipman . During the Civil War , he served aboard the USS America in 1864 and the USS Susquehanna in 1865 .

In February 1873, Lamberton married Elizabeth Steadman. The marriage had three children.

From 1868 to 1885 Lamberton had the rank of Lieutenant Commander, after which he rose to Commander. In 1898 he was originally commissioned to command the US Asia Squadron's protected cruiser USS Boston . However, he was promoted to captain on May 17th and served as Chief of Staff under Admiral George Dewey on the flagship USS Olympia (C-6) during the Battle of Manila Bay .

On September 11, 1903, Lamberton was promoted to Rear Admiral. He spent his retirement in Washington, DC. He was a personal friend of President Grover Cleveland . After his death the destroyer USS Lamberton (DD-119) was named after him, godmother was his granddaughter Miss Isabell Stedman Lamberton. His grave is in Arlington National Cemetery .
