Benno M. Nigg

Benno Maurus Nigg (born April 10, 1938 in Walenstadt , Canton St. Gallen ) is a Swiss - Canadian sports scientist and biomechanic .

After high school graduation and military service in Einsiedeln , he studied physics at the Technical University of Hanover and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH). He completed his studies in 1965 as a graduate engineer. After six years of teaching at the Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz , he became the scientific director of the biomechanics laboratory at the ETH near Wartenweiler. In 1975 he was awarded a Dr. sc. nat. PhD . In 1976 he was a visiting fellow for biomechanics at Pennsylvania State University for one year before returning to ETH as director of biomechanics.

In 1981 he was appointed to the Chair of Biomechanics at the University of Calgary . The 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary made this the best-equipped biomechanics laboratory in the world.

In 1983 he became an International Fellow National Academy of Kinesiology . From 1983 to 1985, Nigg was President of the International Society of Biomechanics . In 1998 he became a Fellow of the International Academy for Medical and Biological Engineering , 2002 a Fellow of the Canadian Society for Biomechanics , and in 2003 a corresponding member of the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences .
