Benno Moiseiwitsch (originally Russian Бенно Моисеевич / Benno Moissejewitsch ; born February 10 . Jul / 22. February  1890 greg. In Odessa , Russian Empire ; † 9. April 1963 in London , England ) was a Russian pianist .

Life

Moiseiwitsch began playing the piano at the age of 7 at the Odessa Music Academy . He was tutored by Dmitri Klimov and at the age of 9 he won the Anton Rubinstein Prize. From 1904 to 1908 he studied with Theodor Leschetizky in Vienna .

Moiseiwitsch made his first public appearance in Reading in 1908 and also settled in England during this time . In 1937 he became a British citizen .

Benno Moiseiwitsch was married to the Australian concert violinist Daisy Kennedy .

Moiseiwitsch's game is characterized by great elegance, delicacy and naturalness. Its excellent technology sounds extremely effortless. Rachmaninoff saw in him his artistic heir. Moiseiwitsch managed to talk to the composer about the meaning of his Preludes. He received important information on the interpretation of the gloomy Prelude op. 32 No. 10 in B minor, which was also the highlight of the collection for Rachmaninoff. In a lengthy conversation, the composer referred to the motif of “returning” to his native Russia.
