Ze'ev Binyamin "Benny" Begin ( Hebrew זאב בנימין "בני" בגין* 1. March 1943 in Jerusalem ) is an Israeli politician of the Likud .

Benny Begin was born as the son of Menachem Begin and his wife Aliza Arnold (1920–1982) in Jerusalem. His sisters are Hasia Begin and Leah Begin. He is married and has six children.

Career

Begin studied geology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem . After graduation, he worked on the Geological Survey of Israel . In 1978 he received his PhD in geology from Colorado State University .

From 1988 he was a member of the Likud in the Knesset . In 1993 he was to inherit Yitzchak Shamir as party leader of the Likud, but was defeated by Benjamin Netanyahu in the vote. In Netanyahu's government (1996-1999) he was Minister for Science, Culture and Sports from June 18, 1996 to January 16, 1997.

In 1997, Begin resigned in protest against the Hebron Protocol . In 1999, with the support of Yitzchak Shamir, he founded the Cherut - HaTnu'a HaLeumit party , which saw itself as the successor to the Cherut party founded by his father and those with other Israeli parties that also rejected the Oslo peace process and the division of the city of Hebron , cooperated. The party remained unsuccessful in the 2003 Knesset elections and failed in 2006 due to the 2 percent hurdle , so that Begin rejoined the Likud with his colleagues before the 2009 Knesset election.
