Benoît Le Coffre (* 1671 in Copenhagen ; † 1722 there ) was a Danish painter of French descent. In 1700 he became court painter at the Danish court and is considered one of the first representatives of the Rococo in Denmark.

Life

Benoît Le Coffre was the son of the Copenhagen-based plasterer and wax boss Claude le Coffre from Le Mans . His parents sent him to Paris to train as a painter. In 1692 his painting Abraham repudiates Hagar and Ismael was awarded the Prix ​​de Rome and in 1693 it was given to a Lhotier by the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture as a thank you for his service. Back in Denmark in 1696, he portrayed Niels Juel . For King Christian V of Denmark, he created ceiling paintings in the Eremitagen Palace north of Copenhagen in Jægersborg Dyrehave . As court painter to King Frederick IV of Denmark, he worked in his new buildings.

In 1912, Thieme-Becker highlighted the painting of the Masked Ball (1704) at Frederiksborg Palace ; a study with the same title is in the Statens Museum for Kunst . In the competition with the other court painter of his time, Hinrich Krock, Benoît Le Coffre is highlighted as the more substantial of the two painters, yet he did not achieve the importance and recognition of Krock in Denmark. Benoît Le Coffre was Ismael Mengs' teacher . After his death he was buried in the Trinitatis Kirke .
