Train

The Belgrade S-Bahn Beovoz ( Serbian - Cyrillic Беовоз ) was next to the Belgrade tram the most important rail-based mass transport in Belgrade . Beovoz was operated by the Serbian Railways (ŽS) and connected the city center with the surrounding area. Beovoz was largely replaced by BG: Voz in 2013 .

Systematics

The total 330 km long railway network of the light rail crosses the central city area in two tunnels running in north-south direction ( Dedinje , 6,160 m long and Vračar , 3,504 m long). A third tunnel connects the Makiš station, which has only been used for shunting operations. The primary function today is the transportation of passengers within the Belgrade railway junction . Since the Beovoz lines only use the infrastructure of the new Belgrade railway junction, there is no connection to the old Belgrade Central Station.

The last four lines ran on the routes Batajnica - Inđija , Beograd Centar - Mladenovac , Pančevo (Vojilovica) - Pančevački most and Valjevo - Pančevo (Vojilovica) in tunnels up to 35 m deep under the urban area. With the unfinished temporary station of the future main train station Prokop and the first urban tunnel station Vukov spomenik , which opened in 1996, the Beovoz is also connected to the center of the city. Another important station is the Novi Beograd station , which is currently the central transfer station for long-distance and local transport, as this is where the two railway systems from the old and new central station meet.

The later connection of Beovoz to the Belgrade light rail or metro, which is currently being planned, will take place via the Vukov Spomenik and Prokop transfer stations. An expansion of the Beovoz to Surčin Airport is now in the planning phase and is to be set up from Novi Beograd via a new line to the airport. In the Beovoz system, nine multiple units run on four lines. A total of 88 trips were made daily in 2008, 91 were planned for 2009. In 2008, 3.2 million people were transported on the five lines at the time.

The Beovoz last served the outer routes to the final stops of the BG: Voz in Batajnica and Pančevački most as well as Beograd Centar. BG: Voz trains ran every 15 minutes from Monday to Friday, and at least every hour on weekends.

Trip frequency

The Beovoz trains last only ran every 45 or 90 minutes. While the average sequence of journeys in 1998/1999 was 33 minutes, the situation worsened in the following years due to a lack of investment in the infrastructure of the light rail and the failure of numerous multiple units.

Passenger numbers

The traffic performance in 2001 was 62 million pkm , in 2007 it was 99 million pkm. In 2007, 4.5 million passengers used Beovoz's offer. In 2008 only 3.25 million passengers were carried, which corresponds to 9,000 passengers per day. A capacity of 20,000 passengers per day can be achieved.

Used railcars

Class RVR 412/416 railcars

Since 1980, the then Zeleznice Jugoslavije have purchased railcars of the Latvian RVR EMV 412/416 series for rail operations in Novi Sad, Belgrade, Titograd and Skopje . Of the 26 more roadworthy railcars of Zeleznice Srbije, ten are used exclusively for the operation of the Beovoz, nine railcars serve the current timetable and one serves as a reserve. The railcars are maintained in the Zemun depot, the remont is taken over by Zelvoz in Smederevo and Sinvoz in Zrenjanin.

Since the trains, which are between 11 and 27 years old, are in a technically poor condition today and many units are no longer operational due to technical defects, damage during operations and obsolescence, the investment in new railcars has priority and should originally be in the course of 2009 be handled.

The first new railcars were delivered in 2010. However, these were not used to improve Beovoz traffic. Instead, they were used for the newly introduced BG: Voz S-Bahn system , which has been connecting the Novi Beograd and Pančevački most stations at 30-minute and 15-minute intervals since September 1, 2010 .

Tariff system

Ticket for the inner zone

Two tariff zone systems have been set up for calculating the fares, for the actual city area and the total tariff zone. Around the central zone 1, which is bounded to a large extent by the urban districts of the narrower urban area, there is another zone that includes the outer districts. These cover the entire area of Belgrade, but there is no comprehensive railway infrastructure in the tariff zone.

In October 2008, the price of single tickets was 25 dinars for a single journey in the inner zone and 90 dinars for the journey through the inner and outer zones. All journeys through both zones cost 90 dinars, regardless of the length of the journey.

Monthly stamps for the Beovoz have been available since April 1, 2009. These are each valid for one calendar month and cost 1200 dinars in the normal price and 600 dinars at a reduced price (approx. 6 euros).

History and Development

Reconstruction of the Belgrade railway junction

Railway bridge to the Beograd Centar train station

The establishment of the Belgrade light rail goes back to the extensive reconstruction of the Belgrade railway junction from 1971.

The first groundbreaking for the new railway bridge as the first central structure of the railway junction and the actual start of construction took place in 1974. The railway bridge over the Sava was inaugurated in 1979. However, since the bridge had no feeders due to the lack of tunnels in the city and the construction site of the Prokop station, the Dedinje and Vračar tunnels had to be completed in order to start operating a light rail system.

Work on Belgrade's new main train station, Prokop , began in 1977. The train station, which was planned as the city's central transport hub, was designed for a complex rail system by working on three tunnels crossing the city at the same time.

Despite the delay in the project, the first Beovoz trains have been running on sections between Batanjnica and the Belgrade Center / Prokop station, which is currently under construction, since September 30, 1984. The final stop, however, remained a provisional station behind the new railway bridge with no connection to public transport until 1992.

Official start of operations

The official inauguration of the Beovoz took place in 1992. With three lines, Beovoz trains ran through the city center for the first time on the routes Pancevo – Batanjnica and Resnik – Batajnica. The operational center of Beovoz is in the Beograd centar railway station .

The central axis of the plant is the double-track Vračar tunnel, 3225 m long. This crosses the urban area between the stations Karadordev Park and Pancevacki most. Built from 1974 to 1995, the Slavija station was originally to be built alongside the Karadordev park, Vukov spomenik and Pancevacki most stations. However, this did not come to fruition.

Inauguration of the Vukov spomenik underground station

Gallery in the Vukov spomenik station

From 1985 work began on the first Beovoz tunnel station. After ten years of construction, the Vukov spomenik station , located at a depth of 43 meters, opened in 1995, a station near the city center and a faster connection between the suburbs and the center.

The opening of the station was opened by the then President of Serbia Slobodan Milošević and the political leadership of the Socialist Party of Serbia and JUL on July 7, 1995 in a manifestation that was televised nationwide, strongly reminiscent of the state propagandist manifestations in the former socialist Eastern bloc remembered.

At the opening of the lavish, prestigious building, which with five levels, exclusive building materials and a large bronze sculpture is modeled on the style of the Moscow and St. Petersburg subway stations , Milošević gave the speech that highlighted the economic blockade of Yugoslavia at the time: The fact The fact that our country successfully brought such a project to a conclusion during the years of complete international blockade and at a time when we were faced with external pressures unknown to this day shows that this could not be an obstacle, that Belgrade was the most modern underground station in Europe. It has not only practical but also symbolic value, since it is unquestionably visible that we have stepped into the coming century with the development of our railroad. The railway in Serbia should look like this and this is how it will look when the project that we started here with the realization of the modernization of the railway and high-speed rail traffic is finished .

Central station Prokop

Prokop construction site

The heart of the S-Bahn and railway traffic is the Prokop / Belgrade Center station, which is still waiting for its completion. It started in 1977 and could not be finished yet. With ten tracks, it will serve both inner-city and long-distance traffic. However, the operational center of the Beovoz is already located in Prokop, since all lines converge here.

Gradual closure of the system

Since the existing Beovoz relations in September 2010 on the inner-city trunk line from Pančevački most to Novi Beograd, an urban S-Bahn operated by GSP Beograd with the designation BG: Voz went into operation, which was extended to Batajnica in April 2011 the Beovoz line network initially shortened by this inner-city route and completely shut down from 2013. Lines not taken over by BG: Voz have been integrated into regional train traffic.

Planning for further expansion and improvement of the existing system

Uniform tariff system

So far, the Belgrade S-Bahn has been operated by the Serbian Railways; in future it is to be integrated into the GSP tariff system , for which a feasibility study was commissioned in 2007. The Belgrade Transport Institute CIP completed the integration study in 2008. With a uniform tariff system, Beovoz passengers can also use the tickets for GSP vehicles, which is to be done with GSP transfer stops and an adapted journey at all Beovoz stations.

Shortening the driving act

Today's greatest limitation of the travel act consists in the nine outdated and technically no longer flawless and therefore urgently to be renewed railcar trains made available for the Beovoz, which today can only run at intervals of 30 to 60 minutes. In 2017, the trains will run every 15 minutes during rush hour. Train cancellations are regular occurrences, especially in the evening hours, which prevent potential users of the Beovozes from using it. In addition, there is a lack of passenger information and display boards.

Improvement of information and installation of electronic train displays

Notice with route network map and timetables

An integration of electronic departure and arrival displays in the stations is intended to improve communication between operators and passengers and increase the reliability of use.

Improved connections to the surrounding area

In the course of the planning approval for the stronger presence of the Beovozes in local public transport, an operating concept is being developed which means a complete reorganization of the Belgrade S-Bahn system. In particular, a network plan is intended to improve the current preference for city buses and trams through better accessibility and easier transfers, especially in the surrounding area. Places further away from Belgrade are to be connected to the city center by up to 45 minutes faster than with other means of transport.

The following measures are provided for this:

  • Changeover of the clock frequency all day from currently only 45–60 minutes to 10–15 minutes within a radius of 10 km around Belgrade city center and in rush hour to the end points
  • long-term purchase of 18 new sets
  • Reconstruction of the route to a 70 km / h and in the final phase to the 100–120 km / h once planned in the plan

Political implementation process, financing

The project to expand the Beovoz is to be made possible through mixed financing. The state and the city provide the funding. For 2009, the city had earmarked 13 million euros for the revitalization of the S-Bahn. This would be the first major investment in Beovoz since 2005 and could enable 15 to 20 minute intervals with the purchase of new railcar units. For this purpose, the Železnice Srbije have meanwhile received a loan of 100 million euros from the EBRD for the purchase of up to 25 sets, which will be paid out on March 24, 2009.

At the beginning of 2009 it became known that the planned financing for the reconstruction of the facilities and the procurement of new railcars would be postponed somewhat, particularly due to the economic crisis. Considerations to borrow or lease new railcars were discussed. A more fundamental ownership structure was discussed, whereby the city shares the responsibility of the Beovoz with the state and thus part of the operating costs is shouldered from the city budget. In the future, the Beovoz will also be operated by a joint company. The abandonment of the name Beovoz in favor of S-Bahn Belgrade is also discussed. The 300 million dinars planned by the city for 2009 for the Beovoz remained part of the investment, part of which was to be used for the renewal of the tracks and level crossings. For the first time, four new railcars were to be purchased by the end of 2010, and a further 16 were planned after 2010.

New external routes

In particular, the expansion of the Belgrade – airport connection and the connection to the Belgrade – Borca and Belgrade – Obrenovac connections are in the planning process.

Since the implementation of the planned Belgrade Metro will not be able to be realized so quickly, the city has initially set itself an increased structural improvement in quality for the short and medium-term transport planning in public transport in order to better use the Beovoz connection from the surrounding area to the city of Belgrade. In the short and medium term, it is planned that the Belgrade S-Bahn Beovoz will structurally replace the Belgrade Metro, which is yet to be built, as a means of mass transport running on independent tracks and will serve the city center with an independent rail transport system until the metro is commissioned. The effect is expected to be an increased relief of the city center from motor vehicle traffic, which is possible if the stimulation is an improved cycle and a better public image, the number of passengers increases significantly.
