Berberian Sound Studio is a 2012 British psychological thriller directed by Peter Strickland . It premiered on June 28th at the Edinburgh International Film Festival and had its German premiere on November 25th at the Phantastival in Bremen.

action

The plot of the film takes place in an Italian recording studio from the 1970s called Berberian Sound Studio , in which mainly horror films are set to music. The well-known British sound engineer Gilderoy (Toby Jones), who has made a name for himself as an expert in nature documentaries, is to work on the Italian director Santini's latest Giallo film at the invitation of the Italian director . The shy and sensitive Gilderoy not only encounters linguistic and cultural barriers. The exhausting work in this unfamiliar genre is increasingly disturbing him, so that in the end he can hardly distinguish between reality and fiction.

background

Strickland wanted to shoot a film with Berberian Sound Studio in which the mechanics of the film production are visible, which are usually hidden from the viewer. A large part of the action takes place in a cramped recording studio and only shows the protagonist creating the sound effects. The viewer does not see scenes from the horror film he is setting to music. This process creates the film's special tension.

The film, which Gilderoy (Toby Jones) sets to music in Berberian Sound Studio, is a homage to the Giallo film, a specific Italian sub-genre of thriller and forerunner of the American slasher film .

The soundtrack comes entirely from the British electronic band Broadcast and was released under the title Berberian Sound Studio OST . Strickland had already worked with Broadcast's Roj Stevens on his debut film, Katalin Varga .

In the credits, the English actress Suzy Kendall is named as a special guest screamer . Kendall played the leading female role in one of the style-defining films of the Giallo genre, The Secret of the Black Gloves ( L'uccello dalle piume di cristallo , 1970).

Reviews

Berberian Sound Studio received a positive response from the critics and achieved a score of 80/100 on Metacritic .

"The Englishman Peter Strickland, on the other hand, combines the world of Giallos with the visions of David Lynch in an impressive way in 'Berberian Sound Studio'."

- Gregor Torinus : filmstarts.de

"You have never seen anything in the cinema in such a stylish and creepy way."

- Daniel Kothenschulte : Frankfurter Rundschau

"Every shot is suggestive, but none is illuminating - the film owes much of its oppressive atmosphere to this devious strategy."

- Tim Slagman : Spiegel Online
