Berck Basket Club is a French basketball club from Berck . He was twice French champion.

history

The club was founded in 1929 as AS Berck . After a few decades in the lower-class French leagues, they made the leap to the top division of the country, the LNB Pro A , in the 1970/71 season . The team quickly gained a foothold there and established itself in the top group. In 1973 the team, which also included the German-Hungarian player January Racz , became champions. Members of the championship team are still considered legends of the club today. In the following year Berck defended the title in an impressive manner, the second-placed Le Mans Sarthe Basket was 16 points behind Berck.

As a champion, Berck was allowed to take part in the European Cup, where the team made it to the semi-finals. In the background there were problems, however, because the then President Jacques Renard did not pay the players promised bonuses, which led to some players refusing to accrue. The first leg in Spain was lost against Real Madrid 67:99. Real also won the second leg in France, so that Berck scored a total of 46 basket points less and was eliminated.

The following season, the team made it to the semi-finals of the most prestigious European basketball cup . This time the first leg took place in Berck and was only just lost 85:86 against Ignis Varese . The second leg in Italy was ultimately lost as well.

In 1975 the club was finally renamed Berck Basket Club . Until 1980 Berck played in the LNB Pro A and 1994 disappeared after relegation from the second division Pro B in the amateur classes. This was followed by relegations up to fifth class. In 2011 he was promoted to the fourth class NM 2 league.
