The Mining and Gothic Museum Leogang is a mining museum in the Hütten district of the municipality of Leogang in the State of Salzburg (Austria). The museum is set up in the former miner's house of the former mining settlement of Hütten. The mining history of the region and the associated medieval art are presented on three levels, some of them underground.

The museum was founded in 1992.

collection

The museum received the Austrian Museum Seal of Approval and in 2003 the Museum Prize of the State of Salzburg . It houses a collection of Gothic saints from the Alpine region.

Mining culture

The life of the miners is illustrated above all in the miners ' kitchen, the trades' room and the Hoyerstube. The Hoyerstube addresses the expulsion of a total of 20,000 Lutherans , including many miners, from the Archdiocese of Salzburg in 1731. The Hoyer brothers, who led the Lutherans, earned Leogang the reputation of being the “worst heretic hearth”.

Minerals

Only finds from the region are shown in the mineral cabinet. Over 60 different minerals have already been found in the region, including leogangite , which was found in 2004 on the dump of the Daniel tunnel and on the Inschlagalm.

Sacred art

This subject area shows Gothic figures of saints from the Alpine region, for example the “Beautiful Madonna”, which was made in 1410 either in Salzburg or Prague. It shows an S-curve in the posture as well as a bowl fold in the coat. Both Maria and the child show a smile and almond-shaped eyes typical of this style. The collection also houses one of the rare "Lion Madonnas", the meaning of which in the art world has not yet been clarified, and a prayer nut that shows Emperor Maximilian and his first wife Maria of Burgundy .
