The Leogang show mine is a show mine in the Leogang district of Schwarzleo in Austria . It is located in the oldest mining area in the Salzburg region .

history

Ore has been mined in the valley of the Schwarzleobach for around 3500 years - initially in opencasts , later in tunnels . In the Middle Ages, mining in Leogang was a main source of income for the Salzburg archbishops . Mainly copper , lead and silver were extracted . In the early modern era, cobalt , nickel and mercury were added. Ore mining ended in the 18th century when foreign, cheaper metal began to displace domestic metal. The last mineral extracted until 1970 was magnesite .

The show mine is located to the right of the Schwarzleobach and consists of parts of the Schrattenbach and Prugger collieries. These are accessible through several tunnels that used to be used to dissolve water. These are the Johannis, Barbara and Daniel tunnels.

Show mine

Various hand-hammered pit rooms can be seen in the show mine , some with wood construction or without construction. Several cleared mines are accessible. From the Barbara tunnel, which runs just a few meters above the valley floor, a die , the so-called gypsum shaft, was sunk 35 m deep.

A few hundred meters down the valley from the mouth of the Barbarastollen there is the miner's room with the administration and a snack station as well as a functioning stamp mill based on the historical model .
