Beritan

Beritan (* 1971 in Solhan , Bingöl Province ; † 1992 ) is the nom de guerre of the guerrilla fighter Gülnaz Karataş. She threw herself off a rock in 1992 to avoid being captured by Kurdish Peshmerga of the Kurdish Democratic Party . Since then she has been venerated as a martyr by the underground organizations YJA STAR and PKK .

Life

Gülnaz Karataş was born in Solhan ( Bingöl Province ) in 1971 . The family originally came from Mazgirt in the Tunceli province . Her father was a civil servant. Gülnaz attended elementary school in Elazığ . In 1989 she enrolled in the Faculty of Economics at Istanbul University , and in 1990 she joined the PKK with her fiancé. After a short prison sentence, Gülnaz Karataş became a member of the guerrilla movement.

During armed conflicts in 1992 with Peshmerga of the DPK in northern Iraq, Karataş was surrounded and shot. According to party history, the Peshmerga are said to have called out to her: "Surrender, we will marry you, you will live like a rose" In order to avoid being seized, she threw herself off a rock to her death. Her death was filmed by Halil Dağ. The film bears their battle name "Beritan". The PKK claims to have rediscovered Beritan's grave during the filming.
