Berlin-Totale: Weekly Market in Pankow is a documentary by the State Film Documentation at the State Film Archive of the GDR by Gerd Barz from 1973 .

action

At 3:30 a.m. the construction of the weekly market in Berlin-Pankow begins, so that everything is ready by 9:00 a.m. The market has become smaller in recent years, as many traders have died, and the young people are probably not interested in working outdoors in wind and weather, in summer as well as in winter, nor is it everyone who deals with customers . You also need a vehicle to deliver the goods, because some of them even come to the market from Köpenick and yet it will probably continue to exist for a few years, as a trader suspects.

It's 6:00 a.m. and vendors are still arriving to set up their stands . When the clock at Pankow Town Hall reads 9:20 a.m., the market is already busy. A traffic sign indicates that the square is used as a car park, except on market days Tuesday and Friday. In addition to the sales stands, there is also a snack stand , which is operated by W. Ziervogel, Berlin-Weißensee , Bitburger Straße 101, the owner of Konnopke's Imbiß , and which is well used by customers and retailers. The view continues over several stalls where you can buy shoes, housewares, flowers, clothing, fruit and vegetables, for example. A trader says that she has been running her stand for 23 years, i.e. since 1949, when she inherited the business from her parents. A greengrocer has also been selling on the Pankower Markt for 21 years, but can also be found alternately at the weekly market Boxhagener Platz . A florist has been in the market since 1948 when she married the son of a market trader who took over his father's business. The answers from other retailers are also similar.

The market is now really full. It is noticeable that all goods bought are filled in nets, baskets and bags brought with them, and if a bag is really needed, a pointed bag is made from newspaper. A customer says that she has been going shopping at the market with her parents since 1910, and her husband adds that he is always satisfied. It has only gotten smaller, because it used to consist of four rows of sales, whereas today there are only two, but if it were to be completely eliminated, something would be missing. At 1:00 p.m., the dealers start dismantling the stand and cleaning the area.
