Berlin Total: Sophie Street is a documentary of the State Film documentation at the State Film Archives of the GDR by Veronika Otten from the year 1979 .
action
The first view is from the tower of the Sophienkirche over the roofs and attic apartments on Sophienstrasse in Berlin-Mitte , and then at the eastern end, at the corner of Rosenthaler Strasse , the walk begins. It is noticeable that in addition to the advanced, age-appropriate decay of the plaster on almost all houses, there are many bullet holes from the last battles of the Second World War . The fence that separates Sophienstraße from the cemetery of the Sophiengemeinde and the associated church begins about halfway down the street.
This is where the film's editor, Veronika Otten, finds her first conversation partner, who lives on this street. When asked, he willingly tells us that he has been living here for 16 years in a room with a kitchen, indoor toilet and bathroom for 36.00 marks . He complains, however, that the chimney of the St. Hedwig Hospital in the Große Hamburger Straße is constantly smoking, which is a great burden for the environment and himself. On the other side of the street is the craftsmen's association , which is followed by the bookshop of the Evangelical Young Men’s Association . The next interviewee is a young man with a toddler in his arms, who lives with four people in a two-room apartment (14 m² and 16 m²) with a bathroom and pays 50.00 marks for it. The further corridor along the houses reveals from the company signs in the house entrances that there are several businesses and craft firms in the backyards.
Another respondent reports that he has been living in Sophienstrasse for 22 years. He has 1 ½ rooms and pays 46.30 marks rent, the toilet is in the hall, half a flight of stairs higher. He is satisfied with the living area, as he has a nice view of the park around the Sophienkirche from the first floor. Only the parked cars in the narrow street bothers him, as they cause a lot of noise, especially when getting in and out. He describes the relationship with his neighbors as very good. A little further on, a coal bearer tortures himself down the narrow stairs to the cellar of an apartment building. Another resident of the street reports that she has lived here for 33 years and that she pays a rent of 25.80 marks for two rooms. The sanitary conditions leave a lot to be desired, because the toilets for the whole house are on the ground floor, but that's not all. In their opinion, the house is on the verge of collapse, something that various submissions could not change. She already likes the area and doesn't want to move away, because this is the center of Berlin. One last look goes back from Grosse Hamburger Strasse to Sophienstrasse, which is not particularly long.
