Bernadette Feuerstein (* 1959 in Vienna ) is an Austrian disabled activist , ministerial advisor and court advisor .

Life

Bernadette Feuerstein was diagnosed with progressive spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) in 1963 and has been a wheelchair user since 1966 .

Feuerstein attended the regular kindergarten and the regular elementary school and graduated in 1978. She studied sociology at the University of Vienna and in 1990 wrote her thesis on disabled students. Since 1991 she has worked in the consumer protection section in the Federal Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs and Consumer Protection . She has been the mother of a daughter since 2002; She organizes everyday life with the support of personal assistants and lives with her partner.

Feuerstein has been involved in disability policy activities since 1981. For example, she is co-founder of the disabled advice center "BIZEPS" and head of the working group "Culture without barriers". From 1995 to 1996 she worked on the EU project "Helios". The struggle for human rights and the nationwide implementation of equal civil rights for disabled people has been her main focus since 1997. She is president of the umbrella organization Self-Determined Life Austria (SLIÖ), chairwoman of the Self-Determined Life Initiative Vienna (SLI-Vienna) founded in 2000 and co-founder of the Vienna Assistance Cooperative (WAG). In 1998 she was a guest in Nora Frey's ORF broadcast Treffpunkt Wien on the subject of “Disabled in Vienna”.

In 2003 she presented the first accessible Austrian documentary film with BlickBestetermination - Images of Self-Determined Lives . The success in the German-speaking area in this film with eleven portraits of different people is mainly based on the perspective of disabled people, which is turned around in this documentary. It is not documented about disabled people, but each person shows us an insight into their life. Its importance as a technically innovative product in the Austrian media world is confirmed by the fact that it was the first Austrian film production with audio description (acoustic image description) on ORF and on BR-alpha . The screenplay for the film wrote to her and Bernhard Hruskas idea towards Erwin Riess , directed by Helmut Wimmer with Hruska. The film made its cinema debut on November 30, 2003 and was shown for the first time on television on BR-alpha on September 7, 2004. The film produced by SLI is available on DVD.

Honors

In 2002, the Mayor of the City of Vienna presented Bernadette Feuerstein with the “Humanity Prize” in the City Hall for outstanding commitment in the area of ​​handicapped people. In her acceptance speech, she dedicates this prize as the “Prize of Humanity” to all fellow campaigners in the self-determined life movement.

In 2016 she received the " Wunsam-Hartig-Preis " for her work in the Austrian disability movement and her decades of commitment to the implementation of a self-determined life .
