Bernard Corboz

Bernard Corboz (born April 2, 1948 in Geneva ; † September 24, 2013 ) was a Swiss federal judge .

After studying and doing a doctorate at the University of Geneva , Corboz initially worked as a lawyer from 1970 to 1973 . In 1973 he became Deputy Public Prosecutor ( “substitut du procureur” ) for the Canton of Geneva . In 1974 he was appointed investigating magistrate and in 1975 he was appointed judge at the court of first instance. He stayed there until 1983 when he became a judge at the Geneva Supreme Court. In 1985 he was appointed Attorney General of Geneva for five years. He also became a supplementary judge at the Swiss Federal Supreme Court (1981) and a judge at the Military Court of Cassation (1987).

On March 21, 1990, he was appointed to the federal court at the suggestion of the Free Democratic Party . Until his death he was a member of the first civil law department. On October 4, 2006, he lost the election as the new President of the Federal Supreme Court with 53 votes to 136 against Arthur Aeschlimann from Bern .
