Bernard Binlin Dadié (born January 10, 1916 in Assinie , † March 9, 2019 in Abidjan ) was a French-speaking writer and cultural worker from the Ivory Coast .

Life

Bernard Binlin Dadié attended the École normal William Ponty . He was a participant in the Ivory Coast's struggle for independence and spent some time in prison. In his works he combined the traditional form of black African fairy tales and legends with contemporary subjects (including autobiographical: Climbié ). He wrote plays, chronicles, novels, short stories, poetry and collected fairy tales.

He was twice awarded the Grand Prix littéraire de l'Afrique noire of the Association of French-Speaking Writers.

John Williams used one of his poems (Dry Your Tears, Africa) to compose the score for the film Amistad .
