Bernardino Zanobi de Gianotis

Bernardino Zanobi de Gianotis (also called Romanus , * before 1500 in Florence , † 1541 in Krakow ) was an architect , sculptor and stonemason of the Renaissance . Gianotis belonged to the third generation of Italian Renaissance artists who worked at the Kraków royal court.

Life

Bernardino Zanobi de Gianotis was born in Florence before 1500 as the son of Zanobi Giannotti. After training in Florence, he worked in Rome together with other Florentine artists such as Giacomo di Pietrasanta, Sebastiano Fiorentino and Andrea Bregno. He came to Krakow in 1520 at the behest of King Sigismund the Elder , where he called himself Romanus and was soon called Romanus. Here he entered the workshop of the Florentine artist Bartolomeo Berrecci , where he worked on the Sigmund Chapel in the Wawel Cathedral until 1531 . In 1531 he went into business for himself and founded, together with other collaborators of Berrecci, Giovanni Cini and Filippo da Fiesole , an artists' society that campaigned for commissions together. From 1531 to 1535 he rebuilt the Płock Cathedral and then the Vilnius Cathedral in the Renaissance style.
