Bernardo Dessau

Bernardo Dessau (born August 13, 1863 in Offenbach am Main , † November 17, 1949 in Perugia ) was an Italian physicist of German origin.

Life

Dessau, born Bernhard Dessau, was the son of the orthodox rabbi and teacher Samuel Dessau (1826–1904) and the younger brother of the ancient historian Hermann Dessau .

Since 1884 he studied physics in Berlin and Strasbourg , where he received his doctorate in 1886 under August Kundt . From 1889 he worked at the Universities of Padua and Bologna , where he was an employee of Augusto Righi . He completed his habilitation in Bologna in 1896, where he was director of the Osservatorio Astronomico e Meteorologico from 1900 to 1903 . From 1904 to 1935 he was Associate Professor of Physics at the University of Perugia .

Dessau was a supporter of the Zionist movement and founded in 1903 with Felice Ravenna (1870-1937) the first Zionist magazine in Italy Il Vessillo Israelitico . In 1903 he was the Italian delegate at the 6th Zionist Congress in Basel .

He was married to the painter Emma Dessau-Goitein (1877–1968), who came from the extensive family of rabbis and scholars Goitein . The couple's son was the mineralogist Gabor Dessau (1907–1983).
